Description
This photo was taken from a composite of the University of Toronto graduating class of 1899 when Clara Benson received her BA. Benson, a chemist, received a PhD in 1903. Benson and Emma Baker were the first women to receive PhDs from the University. Benson belonged to the Faculty of Household Science from 1905 to 1945. Clara Benson and Annie Laird were the first women professors at the University.

Martin graduated from Trinity in 1890. In 1897 she graduated from Osgoode Law School and was admitted to the Bar, becoming Canada's first female lawyer.
