Photographs of individuals attending the opening celebration of the Library Science building and convocation of the first Masters of Library Science graduates from the Faculty of Library Science in 1972. Included are shots of the reception with guests inside and outside of the new building, graduates at Convocation Hall, and photographs of the ceremony in the lecture theatre of the Faculty of Library Science where Miss W. G. Barnstead, former director of the School of Library Science, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. Present for the occasion: new graduates; members of the teaching staff and faculty; guests from the administration; other facilities and schools; representatives of the architects, project managers, and building contractors. Four heads of Library Science past, present and future were present at the official opening of the new Faculty of Library Science Building: Dr. Winifred Barnstead, Miss Bertha Bassam, who retired in 1964, Brian Land, who became Dean when the School became a Faculty, and Dr. Francess Halpenny, who took office in July 1972. William B. Harris, Chairman of the Board of Governors, formally declared the building open at a brief ceremony in the lecture theatre of the Faculty. With him on the platform were Acting President John H. Sword, Dr. Barnstead, Brian Land, and Miss Karen Savage, vice-president of the Faculty student council.

Davis, Minister of University Affairs addressing the crowd and others involved in this project including: Brian Land, Director of the School of Library Science, and Robert H. Blackburn, Chief Librarian. Also present at the ceremony: Andrew S. Mathers, representing Mathers and Haldenby (principal architects), O. D, Vaughan, chairman of the Board of Governors, Chancellor Omond M. Solandt, representatives of the project managers, Stone and Webster Canada Ltd., the design architects (Warner, Burns, Toan & Lunde) and the builders. This was President Claude T. Bissell's final official public appearance in the 1969-1970 academic year.
