Description
Coates served in the No. 2 Canadian Army Medical Corps. His skills were used in constructing plaster models from photographs of a patient's face before and after injury. Doctors used these models to reconstruct faces. At the Queen's Hospital at Sidcup, Coates worked with Dr. Harold Gillies, the pioneering plastic surgeon who developed some of the world's first successful skin grafts to treat disfigured faces.
