Description
Photographs show Claude T. Bissell, University President, welcoming first year student and addressing the student body in Convocation Hall (Opening address). Students greet returning Bissell who was away teaching at Harvard University the previous year. Free watermelon is given to the students prior to the meeting as a form of protest to Bissell's stance on University governance outside of Convocation Hall. Also, included are images of students and tents in front of Hart House representing "Tent City," which is a dramatization of the student housing shortage at the University of Toronto. This issue is further documented in photographs of student crowds in front Convocation Hall being addressed by student leaders.

Photographs taken during the University of Toronto's "welcome home" reception given in honour of Professor Marshall McLuhan's return from Fordham in 1968. The party was held at the University President's home in Rosedale. Decorations were the works of Professor Peter Pragnell and his team from the Faculty of Architecture. The "God-bless-you-Marshall-McLuhan" buttons were worn by all the guests. Some people in attendance were: Dr. Floyd Chalmers, Chancellor of York, Robert F. Chisholm of Varsity's Board of Governors, Principal Donald Ivey of New College with Sydney Hermant (a U of T governor), and Mrs. Hermant, Professor Peter Pragnell of the Faculty of Architecture, Frank Shuster and his wife, Mrs. Bissell, Johnny Wayne, Principle Wynne Plumptre of Scarborough College, Honourable Mr. Justice Bora Laskin, Rev. J. M. Kelly, President of St. Michael's, Dr. Robertson Davies, Master of Massey College, Dr. D. Carlton Williams, the president of University of Western Ontario and Mrs. Williams, Ernest Sirluck, Morley Callaghan and Professor W.A.C.H. Dobson.

Photographs taken during a meeting of the Campbell Committee sub-committee to examine temporary changes to the composition of CAPUT. In the meeting, attended by some 150-200 students, President Bissell refused to repudiate a working paper by the Committee of Presidents of Ontario Universities and reiterated that until the law was changed, student disciplinary issues were vested with CAPUT. In response, S.A.C. Vice-President, Robert Barkwell and another S.A.C. representative withdrew from the sub-committee and argued that their departure meant that the committee should be dissolved. The sub-committee continued the meeting and when it finally adjourned, the students voted for a mass meeting to take place in two days time.
