G. Barnstead, former director of the School of Library Science, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. Present for the occasion: new graduates; members of the teaching staff and faculty; guests from the administration; other facilities and schools; representatives of the architects, project managers, and building contractors. Four heads of Library Science past, present and future were present at the official opening of the new Faculty of Library Science Building: Dr. Winifred Barnstead, Miss Bertha Bassam, who retired in 1964, Brian Land, who became Dean when the School became a Faculty, and Dr. Francess Halpenny, who took office in July 1972. William B. Harris, Chairman of the Board of Governors, formally declared the building open at a brief ceremony in the lecture theatre of the Faculty. With him on the platform were Acting President John H. Sword, Dr. Barnstead, Brian Land, and Miss Karen Savage, vice-president of the Faculty student council.
