Benson and Emma Baker were the first women to receive PhDs from the University. Benson belonged to the Faculty of Household Science from 1905 to 1945. Clara Benson and Annie Laird were the first women professors at the University.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine with Dr. Banting for his part in the discovery of insulin in 19l23. MacLeod resigned the Chair of Physiology in 1928 and died in 1935.
